    Computer Woes

Posted by Dave on Sunday, October 07, 2007 @ 02:09 PM

    Jeff and HeatherDawn,

I'm trying to get our new Dell laptop up and running, but, as usual (at least for us computer illiterate types) it's not going smoothly.  Outlook Express has started popping open with an error message Ox800ccc32.  The logon has our password already filled in, which it says is incorrect.  When I re-enter it, it still says it's incorrect and won't go anywhere.  When I control alt delete (because I can't go anywhere) the message says it can't end the program because it is waiting for a response from me.  That one I can apparently override because it goes away.  I went to add/remove programs, thinking I'd re-install it, but Outlook Express isn't even listed.  I went to Microsoft to download it, and found no download other than some patches.  In so doing, however, I found some third-party "Registry Cleaner" programs that offer to scan my computer and fix all errors for free.  I'm not at all sure I want some unknown program (what if it's NSA?!) going through my computer.  Any recommendations?

    Dave

Ok, STAY AWAY FROM THE REGISTRY CLEANER!  I talked to my friends at Computer Works, and they said that it is usually just another problem, in another form.  Lynne suggested getting on the phone with Dell (good luck with that...my Dell people have what sound like Indian accents, and are difficult to understand!) and see if they can help.  If all else fails, try calling them to return the computer, and I am sure that your fix it customer service will go a bit faster.

I could get myself into some major hot water by handing out computer advice, but I did a quick search on the error code you're seeing and here's what I found:

Authentication fails when you use Outlook or Outlook Express to try to log
on to a HTTP-based mail server if you use Internet Explorer version 7.0:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=904942

If you click on the link, it'll take you to a Microsoft Help and Support page. Scroll through it to find your OS and then follow the instructions. Hope it helps!
