    Holiday and Seasonal Themes

Posted by Jeff on Friday, October 31, 2008 @ 04:56 PM

I hope everyone is enjoying the custom theme for the day. I thought it might provide a little extra fun for Halloween.

In the spirit of various holidays and seasonal events, I thought it might be fun to overhaul the site's everyday theme with a custom theme to celebrate the more prominent events throughout the year. With the sheer number of globally-celebrated holidays, I can't guarantee that every possible holiday will be covered but I can certainly attempt to cover as many as possible.

In polling those of you who have already customized your design settings (colors and backgrounds), as well as everyone else, I would like to know your preference from the following options:

    1. Enable all holiday themes and override my custom settings for a day. I think holiday themes sound fantastic.
    2. Enable all holiday themes by default but allow me to turn them off. Spooky cows make me nervous.
    3. Disable all holiday and custom themes. You have the drawing skills of a two-year old.

So, what'll it be? Speak now or you may forever be stuck with cow patties.

I vote for #1, too. I think your cows are cute - with/without the spider webs.

Well, in defense of the cows, the primary domain for the site is "MOOPAD." If I ever decide to stand up a second domain called "BAAPAD", rest assured the goat and sheep community will be the first to be notified.

I wanna vote for number 3 just to be a stinker Big Grin (come on, who didn't snicker at that?) but I enjoyed the change, so, number 1 it is.

Not to give away any secrets or anything...

But when I create a theme, I always add the background images to the existing patterns under the Design section. So if you really do miss the "mooers", you can easily re-apply them as your background pattern. It's the most recent pattern I added so it will be the last of the total swatches in the pattern drop-down.

Not sure why your background is still black, but you should be able to update that using the Palette selector which is also in the Design section. Because it's not immediately obvious, the button to apply your currently-selected color within the color selector is the small square button with a colored circle on it. It resides in the bottom right-hand corner of the color selector tool.

The button for applying your color in the color palette tool has now been updated. It's the big gray one that says 'APPLY'.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the feedback on seasonal themes. I was honestly a bit surprised at the number of positive replies. There may be hope for you all yet.

Given the amount of enthusiasm regarding the previous theme, I'll do my best to continue generating new ones as I get time.

    Thanks again!

I'm looking at the Design section right now actually and seeing how I can add more background options for everyone. As it is right now, it's already too slow to download all the images so I'm going to have to incorporate some sort of paging mechanism so they don't all display at once.

Since you won't be seeing all the images at once, it then forces me to add in some sort of search or tagging feature so you can narrow your results, etc. Not impossible by any means. I just have to map it all out in my head and figure out how to update it so that it stays simple but is more usable.

I'll keep you up to date on my progress.
