    Home Again

Posted by Peggy on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 @ 07:14 PM
Thanks to everyone for their positive thoughts and healing prayers.  Mom, Lois, and I had a great trip.
It rained off and on the day we drove to Federal Way, but the traffic was good and the rainbows beautiful.  The next day, we were given a free upgrade to first class and had a smooth flight to Anchorage.  We landed on a clear fall day, enjoyed the gold leaves and white mountains on our drive to Kenai, and arrived just as it was getting dark.
In our hotel room, we found a vase of flowers and a large basket of fruit, trail mix, and chocolates from Robert and Sheila DeVolld.  For those who don't know, the DeVolld's moved to Kenai 40 years ago, fresh out of Bible College, and with Mom and Dad's help, established the Keani Christian Church.
After meeting with Robert, Friday morning, we had lunch them and spent the afternoon visiting with Sheila.
Saturday, was sunny and after a nice service for Dad, we drove to the end of the North Kenai road.  There, at the Captain Cook Park (which Dad helped build) we walked down to the beach and scattered Dad's ashes.  About a 1/4 mile down the road, we scattered Ron's ashes in the Swanson River, his favorite fishing hole.
Sunday, we attended services, had lunch with the DeVolld's and another couple, at Dad's favorite pizza parlor and went back to evening services.  All in all, we saw lots of friends, drove around to familiar places, saw several moose with their calves and enjoyed the beauty of an Alaskan fall.
We were also reminded of why we left Alaska.  Monday morning, we woke to 27 degrees and snow.  Fortunately, it was only a dusting of light snow that blew off the roads, leaving them dry.  Within 10 miles of the hotel, the skies were clear and we had a good drive back to Anchorage.  After a smooth flight and a long drive the next day, we arrived safely home.  Grandma Dorothy is adjusting well and I think greatly relieved, both for herself (she was getting worn out) and for Grandpa Warren (he's been wanting to go home to Heaven for quite a while.)

It's good to hear that you're back and safe. Snow and cold temps aside, your post did make me long for Alaska. Hard to believe I was so against the move back to begin with.

I didn't realize that Grandpa helped build Capt. Cook state park. I have a lot of fond memories of that place and the ocean overlook there is actually the number one place that I go to in my mind when I want to think of a relaxing and peaceful moment. I think that's the spot I'd choose for me - though, if I remember correctly, it can be fairly windy there.

I thought the spot you chose for Ron was entirely appropriate, even if it brought me a chuckle thinking about it.

I'm glad that Grandma is doing well and adjusting. I hope the holidays will see that trend continue. I know family visits will be a lot more relaxing for her. She seemed to be constantly on her feet when I was there.
