Drop Out # 1 Has Returned

Posted by Richard on Thursday, July 26, 2007 @ 12:30 AM
Yes, Ahem, I have been failing miserably in my blogging duties.  Too many things, maybe enough time, but definitely not enough me.  We did finally decide on a new camera after much research and many reviews.  The problem now is the 200 pg manual and the time to digest it.  The bank replacement career may be coming to a close.  Only a few more loads to go.  I would post pics if I had time to learn how to operate the camera.  That's how the last few weeks seem to have gone.  Some how the subject of pools and swimming came up right after Violet's swimming lessons, so that led to the pool setup installation and filling.  Then the pump had to be rebuilt cause the seal leaked like a sieve.  Then the pool occupants seemed to think that 72 degrees was a tad on the FREEZING side so a solar water heater had to be contrived and mounted on the roof.  Once that was ready the weather promptly went to gray and cloudy.  Yesterday was the first sunny day we have had in some time but by the time the sun came out we were at the fair.  This is not an automatic thermostatically controlled system.  Valves have to be opened and closed, so no heat until today.  It worked well today but the nights have been cooler so I'm not sure if we are gaining temp or not.  Maybe I can just hide the thermometer and tell them the water's nice and warm.
The Google photos were great.  I'm sure Lisa was thrilled to see Rusty's house.   Nice job.  We were trying to figure which stage of bank slide we were looking at.  Pretty amazing, the stuff that's available.  Well, that's it for now.  Expect pics some time before snow.

At least you're getting something accomplished beyond dealing with the scum of the earth.  What kind of camera did you get?

Dave, I seem to have bypassed most of the scum of the earth and gone directly to the dirt.  For some reason, dirt has become the central theme of my work in one form or another.  Rocks, dirt, gravel, fill or the equipment to move it, I can relate to.  I remember when I was 10 or 12 Dad saying " you have to use your head, not your hands or you will end up digging ditches".  So much for heeding that advice.  I will admit I did manage as much as possible to avoid the use of any non-mechanized shovel, but the rest is history.  I guess some people never out grow their fun in the  sand box, they just keep getting bigger sandboxes and larger Tonka Toys.  Honk Honk, comin' thru

The camera we got is a Canon S5 IS.  After looking at the 200 page (small pages) manual it will do everything but the laundry.  User friendly was not one of the requirements for the technical writers.  I have learned more from trying things on the camera than from the manual.   So far I have taken a few pictures and finally figured out how to replay them.  Of course technology must advance so the new SD cards no longer fit in the old USB card reader so a trip to Staples is next on the list.
Typing is a bit slower these days as I was trying to take the lid off an 5 gallon oil pail.  You may remember you have to cut the slots around the edge of the lid to remove it.  Well the last slot was not cooperating with the semi-dull box knife so the obvious answer was to apply more pressure with the knife hand while supporting the rim with the other.  Yah, I know DUMB, DUMB DUMB.  Given enough force, even a semidull box knife  will  work on a finger.  Luckily there was bone in the way and nurse Peggy was on standby.  I only got the tip of my left middle finger but it sure did smart.   I am now taped into a finger cast until it grows back together.  What a pain in the finger.  I wasn't that fast at typing as it was, but half speed is better than none.

If you have a few minutes, READ THE MANUAL.  I sat down with ours and just went page by page, doing as they did...It really does help...and you will get some really good pictures.

    Yikes!  Sorry about the finger...
